Boeing India looking to partner with students and defense startups
Boeing has announced a partnership program to nurture budding Indian entrepreneurs. This program called the Boeing University Innovation Leadership Development program is open to Indian students and faculty across the nation. To participate, one needs to submit an application describing an innovative idea as a solution to a real-world problem.
A judging panel, along with a set of subject matter experts and Boeing India engineers, will review submissions from across the country. The best team will win USD 10,000.
This application is free of cost, and so is the workshop post-selection. If selected, the team will get access to experienced entrepreneurs, engineers, and marketing professionals who will help refine the idea into a business proposition that can be pitched to investors.
The boot camp will focus on sharpening future entrepreneurs’ skills, helping them compete with their peers. The course will last one week, at the end of which the teams will be invited to pitch their ideas in front of a jury. Teams selected by the jury will be sent to Bangalore to participate in the Boeing Innovation Day at the Boeing campus. While the BUILD program may or may not result in a career at Boeing, it is aimed at taking students and faculty through the process of developing a concept into a viable business idea.
“Boeing is committed to nurturing innovation and skill development in India. We believe that a close partnership with India’s academia and growing entrepreneurial ecosystem has the potential to reimagine the future of aerospace for the world,” said Boeing India President Salil Gupte.
“With Boeing University Innovation Leadership Development (BUILD) program, we are creating a platform for students and entrepreneurs to not only benefit from our vast experience and partner networks but also develop their ideas into path-breaking innovations,” he said in a statement.
The last date for submission of applications is June 10. By June 17, teams shortlisted to attend the boot camp will be announced, after which the boot camp will begin. The regional pitch competition will be held in August, with the finals being held at the Boeing Campus in Bangalore in September.
Boeing India is looking for innovators in the following fields
1. Aerospace
2. Autonomous Vehicles
3. Advanced Manufacturing
4. Internet of Things
5. Augmented and Virtual Reality
6. Analytics
7. Materials
8. Robotics
The following may apply
1. Students who have completed at least 2 years of an undergraduate course
2. Students enrolled in a Masters or Ph.D. program
3. Postdoctoral researchers
4. Entrepreneurs or startup founders in the ideation stage (without funding or an associated product)
The team sizes are limited to a maximum count of 3, with no more than 1 professor or guide per team. Students may apply at any one of the seven institutes closest to their residence, as listed below
1. IIT Delhi
2. IIT Gandhinagar
3. IIT Bombay
4. IISc, Bangalore
5. IIT Madras
6. T-Hub, Hyderabad
7. KIIT, Bhubhaneshwar
In February, Boeing India had announced that it would enter into a partnership with HAL and Mahindra to produce the F/A-18 Super Hornet, the KC-46A Tanker and the AH-64 E Apache Guardian attack helicopter via a futuristic ‘factory-of-the-future’ manufacturing pipeline.
On the 1st of March, Boeing formally inaugurated the Tata Boeing Aerospace Limited (TBAL) facility. The inauguration was carried out in the presence of Boeing Defense, Space & Security CEO Leanne Caret, state officials from Telangana, the U.S. ambassador to India, and leadership from Boeing India and Tata Advanced Systems Limited. This facility has been producing aero-structures for Boeing’s AH-64 Apache helicopter, including fuselages, secondary structures and vertical spar boxes for international customers.
Over the years, Boeing has organized programs like the HorizonX India Innovation Challenge and the Accelerated Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Apprenticeship in similar efforts to create a skilled talent pool. This is good news for aspiring Indian engineers looking to work with one of the largest aero brands in the world.
